My services

Language

Language refers to the words that we use, how we put them together and how we use them to communicate with others. It may also refer to how we understand words others use with us.

I work with clients to support them in increasing their vocabulary, creating sentences and narrative and understanding others.

I use current evidence-based techniques, including: robust vocabulary instruction, colourful semantics and narrative intervention. I am also trained in Hanen - It Takes Two to Talk, an evidence-based early language program designed to support parents of children with delayed language to provide intervention at home.

Speech

Speech refers to the way we move our mouth and lips to articulate sounds when speaking. I have experience working with a range of speech concerns, however, I am not currently accepting clients who have speech sounds as their primary goal. I am able to provide support for clients who have speech goals alongside other goals, such as language or AAC.

Augmentative & Alternative Communication

At North Star, we are passionate about working with clients with different or complex communication needs. We strive to find an effective and appropriate communication system for those who benefit from an alternative form of communication to communicate effectively with those around them. We support clients on their journey to implement low-tech AAC, such as picture boards, as well as high-tech AAC such as a dedicated device or iPad.

We have experience working with a range of systems, including LAMP and Proloquo2Go, as well as PECS, communication boards and PODD.

Literacy

Literacy refers to our ability to read and write. I use the Sounds-Write program - an evidence-based phonics program that is typically considered gold standard for literacy instruction. I am passionate about supporting clients to read functional text, such as recipes or instructions, as well as their favourite book!

I also support clients in their writing through narrative (story writing) intervention and language goals.

Play & Social Wellbeing

I am trained in the Learn to Play imaginative play program. Play is an essential skill in developing language, meaningful connections and social wellbeing. As such, it is often an important goal for younger clients.

I aim to use a play-based approach with all of my clients. Play is a strong motivator and a powerful way to functionally practice skills we learn in our sessions.
